Cloth Curtain Tests

I started on a personal project, as I've been learning more about Maya Cloth and what it takes to make it really work, I decided to start with something simple. This is still a work in progress, but I thought it would be nice to post progress clips as I work toward my final goal. I hope to accomplish the look of a theater curtain opening and then closing again after the actress takes a bow and leaves the stage. It has been quite a fun project to work on, especially trying to get everything to look and move right. So far I have a clip of getting the cloth panels to translate into the look of a gathered curtain. Next is a test of getting the curtain to pull back, and then drop closed. I still have a lot I want to work on, but I am happy with what I have accomplished so far.

Cloth Skirt Tests

Here are some cloth tests showing my progress on the skirt for my thesis character, Sarah. They are all play blasts in AVI format. I thought it might be fun to show some of the process. The first is quite stiff, where as the second just doesn't seem to want to stay on. However, after playing around for while, it finally starts to look a bit more promising in the third file.

Ponytail Hair Progression

This was a fun challenge, getting a ponytail constraint to hold up correctly and believably for an animation. These next couple play blasts and renders show some of the process I went through to reach the final rendered look. The first is a test to see how well the constraints held the ponytail. The second is to see how well the constraints hold when they move with the animation. The third is the final render of the scene with lighting.

Lipsync and Hair Progression

This was my first time working with Hair Dynamics. The project was to make a characture of ourselves and then do an animation/lipsync using it. While designing my character I just couldn't seem to accomplish the look I wanted with modeled hair, and decided to try using Maya Hair. After a night of playing around, I had the style and rough dynamics ready to go. By the end of the project I was very pleased with what I taught myself about Maya Hair, and thus began my journey to become a Hair and Cloth effects Artist. Please enjoy the animation that started it all.
